The rapid developments of smart technology and the vision of smart cities have led to parallel developments of various innovative transport means. Among them, connected-autonomous vehicle (CAV) is being planned, designed, and developed worldwide such as the self-driving Waymo car, the Tesla Autopilot, and the Dynamic Autonomous Road Transit (DART) in the city of Singapore. Innovative vehicle configuration and operation in the CAV shall demand new requirements for the design and construction of road infrastructure.
This presentation will (1) provide an overview on the development of CAV and its interaction with road infrastructure; (2) elaborate the roadway elements for CAV operation in consideration of passenger ride comfort and speed recommendation; (3) explore the pavement design to support CAV operation during long service life; and (4) introduce several types of smart pavement in the era of CAV. Even challenging, CAV development has brought many opportunities for innovative road infrastructure design.
