Master of Engineering (M.Eng) & Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) (by Research)

Programme Requirements

CEE offers higher degree programmes by research, on a part-time and full-time basis. They are:

  • Master of Engineering (M.Eng.):
    Minimum period of candidature is 12 months, maximum is 36 months
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.):
    Minimum period of candidature is 24 months, maximum is 60 months

Candidates may submit their applications anytime and those who are accepted may be admitted in either January or August, subject to the approval of the university.

Course Requirements:

In addition to pursuing independent research, the candidates are required to satisfy the following requirements:

  • M.Eng. – 9 AUs, with an average grade of B- or CGPA of 3.0;
  • Ph.D. – 18 AUs, with an average grade of B or CGPA of 3.5

Exemption from the coursework courses may be granted by the Chair of the School if the candidate is deemed to have already done sufficient coursework in the relevant area in a Master’s degree program at a recognized university.

A maximum of 3 course exemptions may be granted for PhD students, and 1 course for MEng students.

At the end of the program, the student is required to write and submit a thesis, which will be examined by internal and external examiners.

PhD confirmation exercise:

In addition to satisfying the course requirements, students are also expected to submit a Confirmation Report and pass the oral presentation by the end of Year 2.
